. >> nancy cordes is in henderson, covering the obama campaign. good morning. >> reporter: norah, good morning. while the president does his homework, the obama campaign team is working hard itself to trying to lower expectations for the president's performance. white house press corps was chuckling yesterday when they tried to argue that the president's tendency toward answers may be a liability in a debate where candidates are expected to be succinct. they're also arguing that the president hasn't had as much time to prepare for this debate as governor romney. we don't know exactly how much less time he has had, because the campaign doesn't tell us how much time he spends practicing. they like us to think it is very little time, indeed. what we do know is that he is holed up at a westin hotel outside of las vegas with his top aides and with massachusetts senator john kerry, playing romney in mock debates. kerry knows romney well. they are long-time massachusetts politicians and, of course, kerry knows his way around a presidential debate because he went up against george w. bush in 2

august. the obama and romney campaign jumped on these figures and, of course, they came down on opposite sides. cnn political editor paul steinhauser joining us this morning. good morning, paul. so there's one month, hard to believe, till election day, and no issue bigger than jobs, right? >> no doubt about that, randi, and you're right. after what you could consider a tough week for the president coming out of that debate in denver the jobs numbers are a good sign for his re-election bid, a happy sign for the re-election team, but for mitt romney this is fascinating, landi, because the unemployment rate is below 8% for the first time since barack obama came into the white house back in january of 2009. you have heard mitt romney on the campaign trail over and over again, over the last year and a half running for the white house, criticize this president on jobs for the unemployment rate being over 8%. now it is under 8%. now it's time for mr. romney to have to pivot from his favorite line. take a listen to both candidates on the campaign trail yesterday reacting to the jobs numbers. >>

of the things i have heard people say this morning are correct. but i strongly believe that the reason we are in a downsized economy and situation now is because that has been the deliberate aim of the republican congress to prevent president obama from winning a second term. they admit that. there is another reason why they have projected for 2013 and beyond is downsized. that is because each of the members of the budget committee has signed that pledge of grover norquist to not under any circumstances increase or began a tax of any amount. the hands of congress are tied by that. host: what about your personal situation? of you changed your idea of the american dream? caller: i see it changing all around me. it has not affected me all that much because i am retired. host: thomas rights and that has a different perspective. we are looking at another tweet. the allstate national journal heartland monitor poll asked, what are signs of getting ahead? being free of debt is a sign of getting ahead. it also said being able to save it for a comfortable and secure retirement. having a secure job
